Import glossary: fruit and vegetables
The terms you will see when importing Moroccan produce into Europe, explained briefly. These are general definitions; check current rules before you ship.
Why these terms matter
Trade terms decide who pays and who carries the risk. Documents and tariffs decide whether a load clears the border. Know both before you order.
- DAP
- Delivered at Place (Incoterms 2020): the seller delivers the goods to a named place in the destination country. The buyer handles import clearance and duties.
- FCA
- Free Carrier (Incoterms 2020): the seller hands the goods to a carrier named by the buyer, at a named place. Risk passes at that handover.
- EXW
- Ex Works (Incoterms 2020): the buyer collects the goods at the seller's premises. The seller has the smallest obligation and cost.
- CIF
- Cost, Insurance and Freight (Incoterms 2020): the seller pays freight and minimum insurance to a named destination port. Risk passes at loading; it is a sea and inland waterway term.
- incoterm
- An International Commercial Terms rule published by the ICC. It defines which party pays which costs and when risk passes between buyer and seller.
- EUR.1
- A movement certificate that can support preferential tariff treatment between Morocco and the EU. Whether it, or an origin statement on the invoice, applies depends on the product, value and agreement: confirm before shipping.
- Phytosanitary certificate
- An official document from the exporting country's plant health authority confirming that a consignment meets the importing country's plant health requirements.
- CHED-PP / TRACES
- CHED-PP is the Common Health Entry Document for plants and plant products. It is filed through TRACES, the EU system for health certificates and notifications, and EU border checks use it for plant products.
- MRL
- Maximum Residue Level: the highest legal level of a pesticide residue allowed in or on food. Produce above the EU MRL can be rejected.
- Cold chain
- Unbroken temperature control from packing to delivery. Our two temperature lanes are 0–4 °C and 7–13 °C.
- European pallet (120×80)
- A standard pallet of 1,200 × 800 mm, the size most European warehouses and racks are built for.
- Calibre
- Size grading of fruit or vegetables, usually by diameter or weight. Grades and size ranges depend on the product and the buyer's specification.
- Brix (sugar)
- A scale for the soluble solids in fruit, mainly sugars, measured with a refractometer. A higher Brix usually means sweeter fruit, but it is only one quality indicator among several.
- Consolidated load / groupage
- A shipment that combines goods from several shippers in one vehicle, sharing the transport cost.
- Full truck load (FTL)
- A truck dedicated to one shipper. A full truck at Agro Morocco carries 33 pallets.
- Reefer container
- A refrigerated container with controlled temperature, used for sea transport of perishable goods.
- EU entry price
- A minimum import price the EU applies to some fruit and vegetables under certain conditions. Whether it affects your product depends on current EU rules; check them before pricing.
